In remembrance of Peter, our dear friend and hiking partner, we are doing a memorial hike at the West Mountain. This is a joint hike of 5 meetup groups: : Hike Putnam & Beyond, Westshester Hiking, Northeast High Peaks and Photography, Hudson Valley Hikers, and NY Outdoor Fitness & Fun. What: Peter Cirilli Memorial Hike - West Mountain When: March 20, 2010 10:30 AM Where: Anthony Wayne Recreation Area - Anthony Wayne Dr, Stony Point, NY 10980 Length: 6-7 miles. Difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous Total Elevation Gain: About 1,500 feet Time: 4 - 4.5 hrs. Dogs: Permitted on leash. This is a special hike for those that knew and hiked with Peter, to celebrate the good times we had hiking with him and to share stories. To limit the combined group size, we would like to give priority to Peter's friends and acquaintances. If you knew Peter, please join us for this memorial event. This stunning hike is along the West Mountain ridge in northern Harriman State Park. Full of great views of the Hudson River, Bear Mt. and the hills to the East and West. Also a couple of fun rock scrambles. This hike is posted on 3 Meetup groups (Hike Putnam & Beyond, Westchester Hiking Meetup Group and Northeast High Peaks & Photography) so please join only one. We will begin the hike with a moment of silence/remembrance for Peter. Folks can say a few words if they like. We'll then set out in groups along several similar routes with the fastest hikers in front. Depending on the size of the group (that could reach 100), we may send groups out in different directions on the loop, meeting along the trail. Please consider ahead of time if you are an intermediate or advanced hiker so we can put you in the right group at the start. Pace and route will determine difficulty level. The $1 fee for this hike will be donated to the New York New Jersey Trail Conference in Peter's Name. Feel free to donate more, it's all going to the NYNJTC. Harriman St Park: The variety of trails looping across the rugged landscape, draped upon the Highlands, is a major part of the appeal of Harriman-Bear Mountain State Parks. Covering nearly 52,000 acres, this network of practically infinite trail combinations is unmatched in the area surrounding metropolitan New York. Directions to Trailhead: From points North and South, take exit 17 of the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Harriman State Park. After passing through the empty park gate house, turn right at the 1st (northern) parking lot. Coordinates: 41.297977,-74.026523 Join us after the hike at The Stadium for remembering and drinks. It's just a few miles from the trailhead. RSVP: Please do not RSVP Ã?Â"YesÃ?Â" if you mean Ã?Â"MaybeÃ?Â". If your plans change and you are not going to make the Hike, please change your RSVP so others can attend. Cancellation notices: Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving your house the morning of the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 8 am if required (but most likely the night before). Come join me on this moderate paced, ~5 mile loop hike up and around Butter Hill & Storm King Mountain. The initial accent up Butter Hill will be steep and rocky (with a little scrambling). We will enjoy views from the top before continuing on. The Bluebird and Stillman trails will take us on a loop down, around and up Storm King. Along this section there are some steep drop-offs, and slippery sections. We will stop at various viewpoints along the way with wonderful views of the Hudson river and surrounding hills. This hike is only for intermediate hikers who can keep a moderate pace, and have some winter hiking experience. You should be in good aerobic/physical shape. It will be mandatory to have traction devices - stabilicers or microspikes only (not lighter duty types such as yaktraks) and be wearing no cotton/jeans. Distance: ~ 5 miles Terrain: Moderate with some steep hill climbs, slippery/rocky sections and drop-offs. Dogs: No dogs please. After the hike we will enjoy a group dinner in a local restaurant, this will most likely be at the new Mexican-American restaurant Avocado, a couple of miles from the trailhead. Prior to RSVP'ing please make sure you understand the group's guidelines for Attendance and RSVP etiquette This is a members only event. What to bring Bring plenty of water, lunch/something to snack on. You should wear hiking boots, dress in layers (no cotton), and Stabilicers/microspikes are mandatory for this hike. Having hiking poles, gaiters/waterproof pants may also prove useful. Meeting point As there are several pull outs and this location can only be reached from the south, please pay close attention to the directions: Take Route 9W North for about 8.5 miles from the Bear Mountain bridge traffic circle, to the large parking area on the right. The parking is located where the road turns to the left, after the top of the hill, there should be a blue parking area sign. There is a small gravel lot prior to this parking area this is NOT our meeting point. NOTE: There is no access to this parking lot from the north (i.e. driving south on 9W). You will need to drive over the top of the hill on 9W (you will see your final destination a large parking lot on the left, just before you crest the hill) and continue driving south, turning around where you can. The best turn around point is probably Route 218. GPS location: N41 25.390, W74 00.067. Cancellation notices Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving your house the morning of the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 9 am if required
Please join us for this special walk in memory of Peter Cirilli who passed away recently. PeterÃ?Â's passion was hiking. He was a quiet man, but his presence was felt on each of the 37 hikes he attended with this group. He was kind, considerate, and was always there to help as we enjoyed the trails together. His parting has been a sad loss for all of us, and he will be fondly remembered by his hiking friends. Let us reflect on the good times we had with Peter as we explore this beautiful park. Our walk will include a section of the Old Croton Aquaduct and a loop around Rockwood hall. It will be 2-3 miles long and be taken at a relaxed pace. The terrain is easy with a couple of small hills. The park has some wonderful views of the river and the surrounding hills, and foundations of the hall still remain. All are welcome to attend. This event will be followed by the creation of a remembrance album for PeterÃ?Â's family, please see separate event listing if you wish to attend Meeting location: After turning into River road from Route 9, enter parking on left (indicated as Clearview school parking) Donations: We will be collecting donations in PeterÃ?Â's name and will give them to the NYNJTC who maintain a lot of the trails in the area that have been enjoyed by Peter and our hiking group. Cancellation notices: Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving your house the morning of the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 8:30 am if required HIKING Hiking is my religion. The trail is my pew. I hike a few times per month. To recharge my batteries anew. Hiking is part of evolution. The trail is the natural way. I hike a few times per month. To live a healthier day. Hiking is part of my life. The trails are there to explore. I hike a few times per month. To stretch my imagination more. Hiking is better with a group. Where the trail is loud with chatter. I hike a few times per month, to meet with friends that matter. Hiking to the mountain top. The height and terrain defines the test. I challenge the old body to perform. To climb to the crest. Hiking seeks a oneness. The trail is the way to find. I hike a few times per month. To unify the body, the spirit and the mind. A beautiful poem that I am sure we can all relate to written by our member Joe Stretanski"
This is the longest of the Candlewood hill hikes, encompassing the valleys and the 2 Candlewood hilltops! The hike will be 4-5 miles including some hill climbs and a couple of rocky sections. It will be taken at a moderate pace but we will still allow time to stop, relax and enjoy the the view points. We will do the loop around the hill, then climb up to Candlewood hill north. From here we will enjoy the views over Fahnestock and to the Hudson River. We will then back track a little, cross the saddle and take an unmarked route up to Candlewood hill south for views of the lake. Note whilst I have done this route before, as it is not marked we may end up bushwhacking a little! The hike will include woods road, hiking trails and a short walk back along a road with little traffic. Beginners are welcome as long as they are in good aerobic shape and can keep a moderate pace. Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash or strict control of the owner. Owners should find out and respect the rules of the park, and follow requests made by the organizers. Due to the limit on this hike and the popularity of the events, I am currently not enabling the guest option in order to enable more members to participate. What to bring Bring water, snacks/lunch and a light rain jacket just in case! Wear hiking boots, dress in layers and bring enough clothing for the conditions. Meeting point We will be starting our hike from the barrier (a couple of hundred yards north of N Shore Road) at the southern end of Sunken Mine Road. Sunken Mine road is a dirt road, so you should plan to approach it from the southern end. Parking is limited, so carpool if possible, make sure you don't block access to residences and pull off the road as far as possible. Cancellation notices I will be monitoring the weather prior to the hike and if conditions do not look good, the hike is subject to cancellation. Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving your house, the cancellation notices will be sent prior to 8:30 am if required
Come join us for some wonderful views from Surebridge Mt in Harriman State Park. We will be starting from the Lake Skannatati parking lot on Seven Lakes Drive. We will hike the Arden-Surebridge trail to Times Square (for the rock challenge for those so inclined!) and then on to the little used Lichen trail. At the top we should have extensive views and will take a break here for lunch/snack. On the way back we will pass by the Hogencamp Mine and then follow the Long Path back to our cars. The hike will be around 6 miles, with moderate pace and hills. Friendly, well behaved dogs are welcome, but should be on a leash or strict control of the owner. Owners should find out and respect the rules of the park, and follow requests made by the organizers After the hike we will enjoy dinner at "At The Reef", located on Rt. 9 at Annsville Circle, Cortlandt Manor, NY (just north of Peekskill) Prior to RSVP'ing please make sure you understand the group's guidelines for Attendance and RSVP etiquette. Due to the hike limit I will only be opening this up for members, no guests. What to bring: Bring plenty of water, lunch/something to snack on, insect repellant, suntan lotion and anything else you need to enjoy the hike. You should wear hiking boots, remember to dress in layers and bring enough clothing for the conditions. Directions: To get to the Lake Skannatati from the TZ Bridge, take Rt 87 to Rt 17 north to Sloatsburg. Make a right turn onto Seven Lakes Drive just past downtown at a traffic light. (There is a green and white sign pointing the way to Seven Lakes Drive, Bear Mt, and Harriman State Park) The lake parking is after the Kanawauke Circle (Rt 106) on the left side of the road. From the Bear Mt Bridge follow the Palisades Parkway to exit 18. At the circle follow the signs to Seven Lakes Drive. Drive on Seven Lakes Drive, continuing straight at the Tiorati circle. About 2 miles past the circle you will reach the Lake Skannatati parking on the right. If you get to Rt 106 you went too far. Please the meetup location above will only bring you to the general area, the parking lot location can be found on the Google Map Cancellation notices We will be monitoring the weather prior to the hike and if conditions are not good, the hike is subject to cancellation. Please make sure to check your email/site prior to leaving for the hike, cancellation notices will be sent prior to 8 am if required.
